The knockout round has arrived and the game between the United States and Ghana on Saturday was a really anticipated one at the usa sportsbook.

Not only did the United States defeat Algeria but they won Group C and avoided Germany in the round of 16 due to the 1-0 win that gave the United States the top spot in Group C. Ghana looked like a much easier game versus the United States, at least on paper. England ended 2nd in Group C and they proceeded on to play Germany in the knockout round. They were eliminated at that point when Germany whipped the team in an embarrassing 4-1 final score.
With a victory and 2 draws, the United States had played pretty well in the World Cup at that point. They’ve been struggling to score goals though and they’ve also had some bad luck. They easily could have had 2 or three versus Algeria and at least three in the previous competition versus Slovenia. Clint Dempsey has created lots of chances and Donovan has been sound in the World Cup. Also Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley have performed well. Defensively the United States was permitting a few chances but they’ve got a excellent goaltender in Tim Howard.
Ghana still advanced considering Australia upset Serbia in the other game, despite the fact that Ghana was coming off a 1-0 loss to Germany. Ghana and Australia ended even on points but Ghana won the goal differential. Ghana is the only African team to make the knockout round so they had the backing of the buffs on Saturday. They were certainly reveling in being the final outstanding African team at the 2010 World Cup.
Ghana have genuinely had trouble to score goals though they’ve got some ability. They have just 2 in their three World Cup matches. Their goalkeeper, Richard Kingson bailed them out over and over versus Germany.
Ghana was just a team that the United States could – and likely should – have been able to defeat on a normal basis. It’s not that Ghana is a terrible team. It’s that the United States is just better. So it was somewhat of a surprise, and almost certainly an emotional one to Americans, when the United States team was eliminated by Ghana with a final score of 2-1 on Saturday’s game.
Ghana will now be only the 3rd African team to make it this far by advancing on to the quarterfinals. On Friday they will be competing with Uruguay.
