The British Open is only over a week away and some golfers are practicing by competing in the John Deere Classic where Steve Stricker is the sports books favorite. In this year’s championship, Stricker will seek to defend his title.
Stricker is 12-1 at the offshore sportsbook in golf betting whereas Tim Clark and Zach Johnson are the co-second choices at 14-1.
KJ Choi is also listed by sports books probabilities with an opportunity as he’s 17.5 to 1. This is a crucial championship since there are only two openings leftover to get into the British Open. The greatest finishing player at the John Deere Classic who is not currently in the British Open will get a spot. The other spot is going to go to the greatest finishing player at the Scottish Open who is not already in the lineup.
It seems to be a select few contenders to win the John Deere Classic this week. There are only 3 participants rated in the leading 20 on earth and only seven in the leading 50 contending at this year’s John Deere. Steve Stricker is a logical favorite since he’s the 4th ranked player on earth, but Tim Clark may be a better pick. He is seventh in the FedEx Cup standings and 5th on the PGA Tour money list. It is sensible that he’s second on the probabilities board. Stricker is still liked though since he won the championship a year ago. The rest of the past victors of this championship are not familiar names, though Kenny Perry won this event two years ago.
A year ago it was Stricker taking the title with Johnson finishing second. Johnson has said that he really wants to win this week so he may be a quality pick in a championship that he considers his 5th major. Last week’s 4th place finisher Charlie Wi may be in contention again this week and he has attractive probabilities of 37-1 at the offshore sports books.
Stricker has made the cut in all 11 events he’s played and has 4 leading 10 finishes, including a victory in the Northern Trust Open 4 months ago, in addition to being ranked 4th on earth. He took 6 weeks away in April and May to recover an aching right shoulder and has played in only two events since going back to the tour. The injury disrupted a promising year for Stricker, but rest accompanied by therapy was the only cure, so he simply had to sit out.
Not to be overlooked this week are former victor Kenny Perry at 22-1 and Rickey Fowler who is also 22-1. Bubba Watson has played well this year and he may be a profitable choice at probabilities of 29-1. Former victor Jonathan Byrd is one longshot that may have an opportunity. He has probabilities of 58-1 to win this week.
The John Deere Classic starts on Thursday and carries on through Sunday.
