The Open Championship (British Open) got going on Thursday at historic St Andrews with Tiger Woods the favorite. It is the 3rd major of the golf season and even though he hasn’t played well, Woods is greatly liked in golf betting. He has won twice in his career at St Andrews but based on his play this year, he’s extremely overvalued. Woods is the 3-1 favorite in British Open odds at the online sportsbook.

With the way that Tiger has played so far this year it is somewhat amazing to see him as a major favorite. He’s 3-1 and the following golfer, Phil Mickelson, is 10.5 to 1. The likely victor this week is improbable to be either of those 2 competitors. Woods has struggled merely to make the cut in recent tournaments while Mickelson has never played well overseas. Mickelson has only one top 10 finish in 16 Open Championships.

Following the 1st round, it is especially clear that both these competitors have been overvalued at the online sportsbook. Woods ended more strongly than Mickelson, tying for 8th place with a number of other contenders with a score that was 5 under par. He just has not been playing as well as you would anticipate from the Number One ranked golfer in the world. Mickelson actually ended a stroke over the 72 par, putting him a solid 10 strokes behind the leading contender. Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy came on top in the 1st round with 9 under par. He was a local favorite to win this competition and so far is on track to do that, though that’s a minor surprise to golf gambling.

Rory McIlroy is the 3rd pick in golf odds at 12-1 followed by Ernie Els and Lee Westwood at 14-1. it could be time for Westwood to ultimately get over the hump, since he always seems to be in contention in majors. He does have an injury to contend with but history has demonstrated that wounded competitors can quite often get over them in big tournaments. Els is playing well this year, and he has been great in the British Open odds in his career.

Based on his recent play, Justin Rose is gaining lots of interest in golf odds. He’s 16.5 to 1 to win this week. Along with last week’s victor Steve Stricker, two-time British Open victor Padraig Harrington is next at 20.5 to 1. U.S. Open victor Graeme McDowell is 28-1.

As you look for the victor of the British Open, keep in mind that all the past 5 victors of the British Open gambling has made at least 10 previous starts in the Open. 9 of the past thirteen victors of the British Open were in the leading 7 in this year’s Masters. That stat bodes well for Lee Westwood. If you are looking for a couple of underdogs then reigning champion Stewart Cink could be worth a look at 73.5 to 1 and Charl Schwartzel at 73.5 to 1 is also worth thinking about.

ESPN is providing live coverage of all 4 rounds of the British Open beginning on Thursday morning.
