It can be hard to keep in mind occasionally but when you have a look back on sports history over the past two decades, there is has been no sport that has had larger growth or larger influence than MMA. The upcoming UFC 120 gambling competition in London will mark an amazing sporting voyage –not merely for the sport, but furthermore for UFC.
For a top-notch athlete to have his hat handed to him in any type of contest is humbling and hard, but to have to bounce back and try and save your pride and your professional standing vs a rival precious by his enthusiasts and supported by an entire country is almost extremely hard. And that’s precisely what’s on Yoshiro Akiyama’s plate at the moment.
Akiyama is one of the best known competitors and martial artists in Japan. He has taken part in the Judo World Championships and is a former Asian champion of the discipline. Prior to his MMA career, Ayikama was a decorated judoka. Yet those skills have yet to translate to MMA achievement and there’s pretty little chance that he will have achievement in the UFC 120 odds contest either.
He has gotten a career MMA record of 13-2 with just 5 KOs. Yet he’s yet to fight any one of any real consequence and has taken part in only two UFC tournaments. In his UFC introduction at UFC 100 he struggled with the little known Alan Belcher, who was much substandard to the competitors he will confront in the UFC 120 odds contest. In his 2nd UFC matchup he was defeated by journeyman Chris Leben, who was meant to be the tomato can for Akiyama’s spectacular rise up the UFC challenger list.
But it did not quite work out that way, and despite the fact that it was the Fight of the Night at the UFC 116 competition, Akiyama still lost. That established up his match up in the UFC 120 gambling competition vs Michael Bisping. Bisping is a bit problematic under any circumstances but to have to fight him in his own backyard where Bisping is an English legend is asking a lot. The O2 Arena in London will be stuffed to the rafters and almost each one of the English enthusiasts will be there to watch Bisping beat the tar from his challenger.
That will be Akiyama’s unenviable job in the UFC 120 gambling competition.
Bisping is a former Cage Warriors Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion, and a former Cage Rage light heavyweight champion. He made the switch to the lower middleweight division in 2008. He has hit a tough patch in the last handful of years, losing 2 of his past 4 matches vs good, but not great, competition. Still, though, he has a much more successful record in the MMA fighting than Ayikama does.
But Akiyama is scarcely helpless and Bisping is scarcely insurmountable. The odds are that Bisping will win and it will take a remarkable performance by the Japanese contender – much much better than anything we’ve seen yet – to win. But it’s definitely not extremely hard and we’ve seen much stranger things in the UFC.
