Michael Bisping, the headline fighter in the forthcoming UFC 120 betting competition, is a tough man. Of that there is little question. But he’ll have to be in specifically great form on October 16th, as he’ll have to sustain the weight of an entire nation’s anticipations.
It’s tough for people beyond the borders of England to recognize what a truly huge star Bisping is in England and the UK. In a land where soccer is king, he is the unusual exclusion of an athlete that can rate alongside the nation’s beloved footballers when it comes to popularity and he is the single reason that the UFC 120 prospects contest is being presented in London and not somewhere on US soil.
And whereas that is surely something to be happy with and a huge achievement for a British athlete, it furthermore creates a huge amount of strain and anything below complete domination in the forthcoming UFC 120 betting competition will be a complete failure.
That’s lots of strain on one fighter, yet Bisping is used to this kind of recognition and strain. If anybody can handle it, it is him.
Bisping has furthermore been a well respected fighter in the middleweight division, but he’s just never been rather great enough to win the title. And at his age and with a middleweight champion securely proved, it is not going to transpire any time soon. But Bisping will continue to be a challenging rival, the man that no one wants to fight but a traditional competitor just the same, and never a champion.
Against his UFC 120 prospects contest he should have little difficulty. Japanese fighter Yoshiro Akiyama is a tremendous martial artist and a genuine master of Judo but he is not experienced at MMA fighting and to date his abilities have not translated to this arena. He signed up with the UFC in 2009 and his 1st competition was at UFC 100 in July. Even though he sustained a broken orbital bone throughout the start of round two, he went on to defeat UFC veteran Alan Belcher via split decision.
He was supposed to face Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110, but instead Silva wound up fighting and defeating Akiyama’s current challenger, Michael Bisping. He was then going to fight Silva again a while back this year at UFC 116, however Silva pulled out because of fractured ribs. Instead, Akiyama fought Chris Leben, a not very good fighter who still soundly beat Akiyama. It was his 1st official loss in five years. It will be fascinating to see how he bounces back in his second UFC competition, but the conditions in London at the UFC 120 betting competition will be below ideal for anybody trying to fight the beloved Bisping. It’s hard enough to take on a fighter with a much better record, but to do it on that contender’s home turf is asking an awful lot.
Akiyama’s career is likely over before it even started, and his last competition of any real meaning might just be this one as he’s offered as the sacrificial lamb to Bisping.
