Northwestern took on Minnesota this afternoon in Big 10 conference play at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Northwestern withdre a victory 75-65, and will now go on to play No. 1 Ohio State on Friday in the 1st game of the quarterfinals. This game concluded Minnesota’s fading desires of reaching the NCAA championship later this month.

The Northwestern Wildcats were lead by Michael Thompson, who scheduled a championship record by scoring 35 points. Drew Crawford put in another 15 points for Northwestern. Brian Cardinal of Purdue had the old record with 33 points.

Northwestern’s 13-1 run in the middle of the second half sealed the game for them. The Gophers had no answer to Thompson’s simple scoring. Minnesota was led by Trevor Mbakwe with 19 points. Ralph Sampson III had an more 12 points. But it wasn’t enough to get them through this 1st game, and the reality they lost 10 of their last 11 matches means they won’t be in the NCAA championship this year, either.

This is the 1st year that the Gophers didn’t win a single conference game. They made it to the NCAA championship in all the last 2 years with Tubby Smith as head coach. The squad had such a great early year record that they were ranked as high as No. 13 a while back this year, before going cold late in the year. The loss of their 2 point guards to transfer and injury left the squad without an effective leader on the floor.

This symbolizes Northwestern’s 6th ever in the Big Ten Tournament. They had come into the game with the worst normal year record of the teams in the championship. It is likely that the Wildcat’s merely trust of receiving into the NCAA championship is to win the Big Ten straight up, which is very, pretty difficult to imagine.
