San Diego State is coming into tonight’s competition against Uconn as the traditional survivors this year. The team had to take Temple to double-overtime in order to make it to the Sweet 16, but they made key plays late in the competition to place them over the advantage. Formidable finishes have been a pattern with the Aztecs all season, but tonight will be one of their greatest challenges.
San Diego State is having a magical run in the tournament this year. Their two wins in the 2011 tournament are the only two wins in school history for the program. However, they come into this match as the No. 2 seed, while the Huskies are the No. 3 seed. So despite having little history of success in the tournament, the Aztecs are in fact outranking Uconn.
But that is fine with Uconn, who are delighted to be the long shots tonight. The Huskies shoved off Cincinnati to get to the Round of 16 after gaining an easy win over Bucknell in the Round of 32. They are also coming off of their amazing run in the Big East tournament where they won 5 matches in 5 days to become conference tournament winners. But Uconn is showing no sign of rust or slowing down.
The sportsbook prefers the Huskies to win, however the probabilities are especially near. In the closest spread of any NCAA competition tonight, Uconn is only the 1-point favorites to win. The total is set at 128.5. The competition tips off at 7:15 PM ET in Southern California. It’ll be televised on CBS.
The huge obstacle for SDSU will be closing down Uconn’s Kemba Walker, a prospect for the national competitor of the year. He averages 23.6 points per competition, and appreciates how to draw fouls from the enemy squads. The Huskies will need to shut down Kawhi Leonard, who leads the Aztecs in scoring and rebounds per competition. If comes from this one with an extraordinary double-double, Uconn’s run in the tournament might be over.
