With the way they’ve competed since the NBA All-Star Break and the trade deadline, the Celtics were lucky to get the third seed in the Eastern Conference.

As a result, they are going to be taking on the New York Knicks in the 1st round of the playoffs, a squad which is furthermore messily looking for its identity with a new roster.

The Celtics had some pretty worrying games close to the end of the season, losing to both the Bulls and the Miami Heat in fewer than a week. The loss to the streaking, red hot Bulls was not a huge deal in and of itself, however the 100-77 defeating they took thanks to the Miami Heat should have very concerned Boston head coach Doc Rivers.

As a result, the Celtics rested their starters for the last week of the regular season, properly permitting the 2nd space in the East. The big question, though, if why the Celtics starters required to rest in the 1st place. The squad is not facing any key accidents, although their starting roster is aging. But all things deemed, the competitors could have required a long break before the playoffs start.

In fact, the Celtics have been receiving beaten up inside the paint since they traded away star center Kendrick Perkins. Perkins was a huge body in the middle, and with his departure, Boston is left with a gaping hole inside. Kevin Garnett is more a power forward than a center, but has had to become more visible under the basket only to take up space and help defend.

While it is difficult to feature all the Celtics’ stumbling to the trade decision, that is definitely where the squad 1st began to sink. From being in 1st place in the Eastern Conference, they fell to third behind the Bulls and Heat. They will face the strong – though sporadic – Knicks in the 1st round of the playoff.

And honestly, this 1st round series could be a toss-up. The Knicks could come out competing truly well and eliminate Boston. But any way it turns out, I’m highly anticipating a fight between the two teams, and would be shocked if either made it from the series with a sweep. Anticipate the Knicks to win at least a game, if not two or 3, before this one is over.
