Almost all of the first games of the first round of the playoffs in the NBA Eastern Conference turned out as we all supposed.

The just real upset was the Orlando Magic’s loss to the Atlanta Hawks by 10 points. But whereas the other three first round games went to the faves, there are still a lot of questions about each team in the East, according to their performances over the weekend.

The Magic’s loss was the huge one, so let’s talk about that first. The Hawks were in control for nearly all of the competition after both squads came out to a slow start in the first quarter. But starting in the 2nd, the Hawks starting putting distance between the squads, making it a 14 point competition by the fourth quarter. By then, the Magic may not rally to get over the deficit, and fallen the game 103-93.

The top seeded Bulls also came out flat in the first competition, and were down by 4 at the half and by 8 going into the fourth quarter. It was just a 16-1 run in the final minutes of the fourth quarter that turned the competition around and competition the Bulls the 104-99 win over the Pacers. But Chicago is going to have to begin playing greater in the first three quarters, or the Pacers will near the deal down the stretch.

The Celtics had defense difficulties in the first half of their competition vs the Knicks, and were down by 12 going into halftime. But then their defense turned around, held the Knicks to 13 in the 3rd quarter, and Ray Allen put in a three-pointer in the final seconds to grant the Celtics the 87-85 win. The Knicks seasoned a big loss with Chauncey Billups leaving the competition with a strained knee, and he’s doubtful for Game 2 in Boston.

At last, the Heat escaped the Philadelphia 76ers with a score of 97-89. The two squads traded good and negative quarters, but Miami was able to outscore the Sixers by 23 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. The 12 point lead that Philadelphia built in the first quarter fast evaporated, and the team may not put the competition back together vs the Heat offense.

Strangely enough, nearly all of the top squads in the East came out a little flat this weekend and most were in significant risk of losing their first games. The Magic were the just team to go all the way and decrease the competition, but the others were exhibiting some doubtful playing in the first quarters and first halves. With the ultimate wins, though, it’s still not likely any of the long shot squads will take down the top three squads in the East.
