While the Eastern Conference semifinals are becoming clearer with every passing competition, the Western Conference second round continues to be a dogfight.
The first squad to progress was the Thunder with a win over the Grizzlies, whilst the remainder of the squads bout not to be upset. The Spurs won last evening to stay alive, and in the East the Heat eliminated the 76ers.
The Heat just shot 40% from the field compared to the Philadelphia 76ers 47%, however the difference was all made up in 3 point shots. The Heat hit 12 of 30, whilst the 76ers just made 2 of 10. This covered up Miami’s poor shooting from everywhere else on the floor and won the heat their first playoff series win since 2006 with the 97-91 win over Philadelphia. LeBron James and crew will take on the Boston Celtics in the second round.
It took the Spurs until ot to escape a late-game push from the Grizzlies. From a 16-point lead, the Spurs tumbled to being down 3 in the last seconds of regulation. A last second 3 tied the competition, and then San Antonio won in ot at the free throw line. The Spurs are now a little bit closer to surviving this first round, although Memphis still leads the series 3-2, with Game 6 to be played in Memphis. It’s uncertain the Spurs survive and win 3 in a row vs the Grizzlies.
In the late competition on Wednesday evening, the Oklahoma City Thunder eliminated the Nuggets in five competitions, beating them 100-97 to progress to the Western Conference semifinals. Even though the Nuggets were slightly favored to win the series, the Thunder played well. They shot poorly last evening from the field and from three-point territory, but made 2 times as many free throws as the Nuggets. The Thunder also had 16 offensive rebounds compared to just 4 from Denver.
With last night’s competitions, the Heat became the third squad in the East to progress to the second round, whilst the Thunder became the first squad in the West to eliminate their opponent. The Spurs are still fighting for their lives, whilst the Grizzlies should be fairly self-confident with their comeback and the near finish in ot.
