Chicago Bulls 4-0 over the Heat – is that prediction?

No, this is the Bulls’ current record over the Heat after sweeping them 3-0 in the regular season, and then taking a commanding 1-0 start in the Eastern Conference Finals playoff series. Chicago shut down Miami’s biggest 2 and then stepped up their offense in the 2nd half, cruising to a 103-82 win. The Heat had no successful answers to the crushing defense and were certainly rattled by the end of the competition versus an energetic Chicago Bulls team.

Last summer, these 2 teams decided to reconstruct their rosters, but they had pretty different plans for doing this. The Heat attracted three celebrities in LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, spending most of their income cap to climb this core. Despite the brilliance of these three, there was not a lot of room for much else, and the Big 3 from Miami might have to put the team on their backs evening after evening if they needed to win. They concluded the season in 2nd place in the East, 58-24.

The Chicago Bulls, alternatively, had Derrick Rose but could not persuade any of the foremost celebrities in the league to join them. So they went deep instead, building a young team with tons of energy and raw talent. Lead by first-year coach Tom Thibodeau, the team focused on suffocating other teams’ offenses, whereas scraping together some points of their own. The team finished with the MVP, Coach of the Year, best record in the league, and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

So it was probably inevitable that these 2 would meet in the playoffs sometime. James had publicly and infamously made his move to Miami in order to win “not 6, not seven” NBA championships, whereas Rose only spent the summer balling out and practicing. Despite being the faves in close to every meeting, the Heat could never pretty triumph over the Chicago Bulls in the course of the regular season.

Last night’s Game One of the Conference Finals was truly only a continuation. The 2 teams held the competition near for the 1st half, but then the Chicago Bulls tightened the defense and went on a 10-0 run in the 3rd quarter. James and Wade were never heard from in the 2nd half, as Bosh led all Miami players in points with 30. The Heat outshot the Chicago Bulls, making 47% of their field goals in contrast to 43.7%.

However the Chicago Bulls recuperated huge. They had 45 total and 19 offensive boards in contrast to the Heat’s 33 and 6. Chicago outscored Miami 31-8 on second-chance points. By the time Wade walked off the court late in the competition, he appeared worn out and demoralized, having been defeated down by the Chicago Bulls defense every minute he was in the competition. James appeared little different, sitting on the bench and looking shell-shocked as the Chicago Bulls bench outplayed the Heat starters.

So are the hated Heat no longer the faves? I don’t know. But my money is on the Chicago Bulls to win this series. With their defensive tactic, how they bring the competition to the Heat’s Huge Three, Miami’s deficiency of any scoring besides the celebrities, and the talent arriving off of Chicago’s bench, it seems like an 11-on-3 competition out there. The Heat even attempted sneaking a 6th competitor on the court for a 2nd, all to no avail.

The Chicago Bulls are hard to beat when their defense is tight and their offense is flowing. I feel they’re able to put together that blend three more times in the next 6 games. And if they keep shutting down 2 of Miami’s Huge Three persistently, the Heat will have no answers, not enough victories, and no trip to the NBA Finals in their 1st year together.
