Phoenix was very great on and they also had a winning record on the road. The Coyotes were the 3rd best defensive team in the league last year. Phoenix couldn’t keep their run of success going in the playoffs though as they fell to the Detroit Red Wings in 7 matches.
After Wayne Gretzky resigned, Maloney made a great move before the year commenced as he hired Dave Tippett. Tippett is a far better head coach than Gretzky ever was, so gaining rid of Gretzky and gaining Tippett was an excellent move. Maloney furthermore made various other good moves such as the ones at the trading deadline that got the team left winger Wojtek Wolski, right winger Lee Stempniak and defenseman Mathieu Schneider. Following that trade, Phoenix won nine straight matches.
This year they’re making their first move of the summer by resigning right-wing Scottie Upshall. His deal is for something like the $1.5 million that he gained last year. And he should get it. Until January 28, when he blew out his right knee and ended up requiring reconstructive surgery, he was topping Phoenix in goals a year ago. Before that point, though, he’d gotten 18 goals and 42 points in 49 matches. The team is only praying that his best attribute – his blazing speed – will not be compromised following that substantial injury.
Veterans Robert Lang and Mathieu Schneider are not going to be coming back, according to an statement made by Maloney. The Coyotes furthermore now have 4 unhindered free agents, such as Matthew Lombardi, who Maloney would truly like to cajole back. But that could prove hard for the team, which has a really low-end budget.
Phoenix still needs constant fan support, though they did plenty of things right this past year. They have an great GM and head coach and plenty of young talent. Phoenix will not go under the radar next year as they will be supposed to win. They may still have success though with the roster that Maloney has put together. Phoenix will be an interesting and maybe a profitable team again next year in NHL odds.
